    Nancy Faubel’s little book is barely more than the owners manual for a not-very-good espresso machine. She begins with an over view of the history and production of coffee: if you’ve read any books on coffee, you’ll find nothing new here. Worse, none of it is given any significance: is there some significance to the fact that Yemen was the first coffee-exporting region? Does the difference between “shade grown” and “bird friendly” coffee affect the taste?The core of the book is a five-page chapter that says, in essence, use the right grind, the right tamp, the right temperature, for the right time, and you’ll get good espresso. Unfortunately, you won’t get it from the steam-pressure-powered machine she uses for illustrations. There follow some recipes, which are all of the form of 1 unit of espresso + 2 units of flavoring + 4 units of milk (and sometimes, + ice). That’s not a bad recipe, and it works with mint, ginger, chocolate, etc. , but it’s not groundbreaking, and nothing you can’t find on-line. If you’re struggling to get good coffee from that Rancilio or Gaggia machine you bought, or if your grind never seems quite right, this book will not help; and in fact, it’s difficult to think who it will help.     What an excellent book! Other books just give the standard instructions that come with coffee brewing equipment, but this book goes much deeper! Just a few simple tricks, and the espresso I made at home was unbelievable! It took no more time and didn’t involve buying anything else; I’m a believer! The money I save by making my own espresso at home paid for the book in just 4 days! I know what gift I’m giving my coffee-loving friends this year! Rating: 5 / 5
