Is it safe to fill a coffee maker with sugar water before brewing?

Usually, you just fill the coffee maker with plain water. I was wondering, though, what would happen if I added sugar to the water before brewing. Would it damage the machine at all? I worry it may gum up the friggin’ thing.

You would not want to do that as the water is heated and the sugar may caramelize and end up making a sticky mess in the heater and end up clogging it.

If you really want to have the coffee maker add the sugar to the coffee automatically – put it in with the coffee grounds.

Yes, that will damage your machine. You should never run anything through except plain water unless you are cleaning it.
